Public Relations: metrics and artificial intelligence as keys to success

One of the greatest challenges in this digital era has been learning to correctly interpret the metrics and analytics generated by Public Relations (PR) campaigns.
More than 20 years ago, when PR was just beginning in my country and I decided to dedicate myself to this profession, the most important metric was free press. We carried out our work in traditional media, and reports highlighted how much free space we were able to secure in the press for our clients.

Even today, I still consider free press valuable: it shows the client how much they have saved in advertising thanks to a well-executed strategy of messages and content.

Looking back is fascinating. PR has evolved, yes, but the fundamentals remain: strategy, clear objectives, and well-targeted messages. What has changed is the environment and, with it, the tools. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an indispensable ally to evaluate, optimize, and measure our campaigns with precision.

What are PR metrics and why are they important?

Metrics are essential for:

  • Measuring the success of our campaigns

  • Optimizing strategies in real time

  • Demonstrating the tangible value we bring to the business

They are defined based on KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), the guiding indicators for each objective.

Here is a summary of the most important metrics:

CategoryExamples of KPIsDescription
Reach and visibilityImpressions, coverage, share of voiceHow many people see the message and how it is positioned against competitors
Interaction and engagementLikes, clicksLevel of interaction and audience loyalty
Media relationsResponse rate, key mentionsEffectiveness of relationships with journalists and influencers
Sentiment and perceptionTone analysis (positive, neutral, negative)How the brand is perceived in media and social networks
Advertising savingsAdvertising Value Equivalent (AVE)Estimate of how much it would cost to pay for the obtained coverage
Geography and influenceReach by region or cityStrategic measurement by geographic location
Business impactROI, lead generationHow PR efforts contribute to concrete business goals

What AI tools can we use?

There are multiple AI-powered platforms that allow us to evaluate each metric more effectively. These tools not only automate processes but also generate strategic insights to support better decision-making.

Advantages of using AI in Public Relations

There are many benefits to implementing and leveraging AI-powered tools in PR work. Here are some key ones:

AI as a strategic ally

The use of artificial intelligence in PR is not a trend—it is a natural evolution. It allows us to deliver stronger results, respond quickly, and demonstrate with evidence the real impact of our work.

Many tools offer free versions that you can start exploring. As your analysis and needs grow, paid options will provide even more depth and functionality.

I hope this article has helped you appreciate how metrics and AI can enhance your communication management. Until next time!

The four paths of digital humanism

In recent days, I had an interesting interview with Dr. Albertina Navas, an expert in digital transformation, where we discussed the implications of digital transformation within companies. What caught my attention the most, and what I want to address in this blog, are the 4 concepts that Dr. Albertina Navas referred to as «The 4 Paths of Digital Humanism.»

Let’s start with the meaning of Digital Humanism. On the website:  https://www.factorhuma.org/es/contenidos/unidades/15298-humanismo-digital they state that digital humanism is a thought movement that promotes putting technology at the service of human condition. Joan Clotet, Digital Humanist, Digital Talent Advisor, and member of the Advisory Committee of the Factor Humà Foundation, says being a digital humanist «means considering the impact on people from minute zero of any initiative and involves leading from that place to generate trust and value through them. It involves using technology as a lever for change and opportunity generator for as many people as possible.»

Once we understand the meaning of this term, it becomes easier to understand the concept that Dra. Navas proposes by identifying the 4 routes of Digital Humanism:

  1. Learning
  2. Applying
  3. Analyzing
  4. Contributing

Learning

This term is related to familiarizing ourselves with technology, that is, overcoming the fear of it. Feeling curious to know more, to be amazed by every discovery we make about technology. Dra. Navas suggests that we become allies of technology, not its enemies. Nowadays, there are many free courses on the internet, aimed at beginners to learn the terms, programs, software, and more that will help us better understand the digital transformation we are experiencing in all aspects of our lives.

Applying

Application involves being empathetic, sharing stories with people in a way that technology benefits us, helps us become better, identify problems, and have solutions that do not negatively affect us but, on the contrary, apply technology in a way that supports and helps people achieve the best results.

Analyzing

Analysis is extremely important; we cannot lose critical thinking to guide our audience. In my article on the 10 soft skills of Public Relations, we addressed the topic of critical thinking since it is one of the main tools we must use when applying technology to our daily lives, but above all, when communicating to our audiences with whom we have an ethical and moral obligation.

Contributing

This fourth route invites us to leave a mark, not to be just another passing by without leaving a trace. Transformative digital humanism is one that leaves a legacy for future generations. Contributing means giving our ideas for the growth of others. There are so many brilliant minds in our society that, if they wanted to, could contribute to knowledge, but above all to the understanding and application of technology in the most unexpected areas in a very easy way so that everyone can apply it.

The topic of digital transformation cannot be a taboo subject, demonized, or only for the knowledgeable. Of course, everyone must make the decision to get involved, to want to learn, to want to contribute, to want to analyze, and to play their role as actors in an imminent change that, if handled correctly, aims to support the development of humanity.

I hope you found this topic interesting. I thank Dra. Albertina Navas for her generosity in sharing her opinions and knowledge, and for being my inspiration to write this blog.

See you next time!
