Public Relations: metrics and artificial intelligence as keys to success

One of the greatest challenges in this digital era has been learning to correctly interpret the metrics and analytics generated by Public Relations (PR) campaigns.
More than 20 years ago, when PR was just beginning in my country and I decided to dedicate myself to this profession, the most important metric was free press. We carried out our work in traditional media, and reports highlighted how much free space we were able to secure in the press for our clients.

Even today, I still consider free press valuable: it shows the client how much they have saved in advertising thanks to a well-executed strategy of messages and content.

Looking back is fascinating. PR has evolved, yes, but the fundamentals remain: strategy, clear objectives, and well-targeted messages. What has changed is the environment and, with it, the tools. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an indispensable ally to evaluate, optimize, and measure our campaigns with precision.

What are PR metrics and why are they important?

Metrics are essential for:

  • Measuring the success of our campaigns

  • Optimizing strategies in real time

  • Demonstrating the tangible value we bring to the business

They are defined based on KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), the guiding indicators for each objective.

Here is a summary of the most important metrics:

CategoryExamples of KPIsDescription
Reach and visibilityImpressions, coverage, share of voiceHow many people see the message and how it is positioned against competitors
Interaction and engagementLikes, clicksLevel of interaction and audience loyalty
Media relationsResponse rate, key mentionsEffectiveness of relationships with journalists and influencers

What AI tools can we use?

There are multiple AI-powered platforms that allow us to evaluate each metric more effectively. These tools not only automate processes but also generate strategic insights to support better decision-making.
